Soon after that, we left. This is Jeff and Doyle with the man who drove us to the airport, he had been our tuk-tuk driver for about a week, then when we asked if he had a car, he revealed that he was also a policeman, and drove us to the airport, yes, in his police car and uniform. (It crossed our minds that perhaps he might take us straight to the station and confiscate our equipment, but luckily, we made it.)
aaaand incase this ranting about how great the picnic was is getting to intense, Doyle did this.
this may ruin it for non-bug lovers, but the moment we all sat down and started eating the mango grove was filled with the loudest most beautiful buzz from these cicadas in the trees.
and morphed into this. I’ve been to picnic’s before, but this has probably ruined me for the rest of my picnicing life, how can anything be better than this?

What began as a little lounging near some fruit….
Our last weekend, we went to a picnice in a mango grove outside Phnom Penh with some of the artists, it was the most most beautiful place.
Here are more elders gathered around him to celebrate and pray for him (and Rattana in the foreground). After I took this photo, a pair of strong hands grabbed my shoulders and I thought I was being told to stop photographing the ceremony. Instead, I was led to a table, forced into a chair, and piles of food were placed in front of me. I do heart it here.
A man in this village turned 85, for his birthday the whole village gathered to celebrate and honor him, this amazing thing was part of the ceremony.
Small childrens’ obsession with video screens…a universal principle…

Unrelated to village life, the stuff red ants around here can do with leaves is out of control!
We traveled to Prey Veng province to visit the home of Leang Seckon. Needless to say, the village he grew up in is changing much more slowly than Phnom Penh.
It’s a bit hard to see, but this is a hand painted sign directing you to a place you can watch TV.
